* perf annotate browser: Allow navigation to called functionsArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2011-10-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I.e. when in the annotate TUI window, if Enter is pressed over an assembly line with a 'callq' it will try to open another TUI window with that symbol. This is just a proof of concept and works only on x86_64, more work is needed to support kernel modules, userland, other arches, etc, but should already be useful as-is. * perf browsers: Add live mode to the hists, annotate browsersArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2011-10-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This allows passing a timer to be run periodically, which will update the hists tree that then gers refreshed on the screen, just like the Live mode (symbol entries, annotation) we already have in 'perf top --tui'. Will be used by the new hist_entry/hists based 'top' tool. * perf annotate: Add --symfs optionStephane Eranian2011-08-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If you have --symfs in perf report, then you also need it for perf annotate. This allows off-box assembly level analysis of perf.data samples. This patch complements: commit ec5761eab318e50e69fcf8e63e9edaef5949c067 Author: David Ahern <daahern@cisco.com> Date: Thu Dec 9 13:27:07 2010 -0700 perf symbols: Add symfs option for off-box analysis using specified tree Acked-by: David Ahern <daahern@cisco.com> Cc: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <peterz@infradead.org> Cc: David Ahern <daahern@cisco.com> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20110729232040.GA21838@quad Signed-off-by: Stephane Eranian <eranian@google.com> Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
* perf annotate: Make output more readableStephane Eranian2011-08-18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch adds two new options to perf annotate: - --no-asm-raw : Do not display raw instruction encodings - --no-source : Do not interleave source code with assembly code We believe those options make the output of annotate more readable. Systematically displaying source can make it hard to follow code and especially optimized code. Raw encodings are not useful in most cases. * perf report/annotate/script: Add option to specify a CPU rangeAnton Blanchard2011-07-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add an option to perf report/annotate/script to specify which CPUs to operate on. This enables us to take a single system wide profile and analyse each CPU (or group of CPUs) in isolation. This was useful when profiling a multiprocess workload where the bottleneck was on one CPU but this was hidden in the overall profile. Per process and per thread breakdowns didn't help because multiple processes were running on each CPU and no single process consumed an entire CPU. The patch converts the list of CPUs returned by cpu_map__new into a bitmap for fast lookup. I wanted to use -C to be consistent with perf top/record/stat, but unfortunately perf report already uses -C <comms>. v2: Incorporate suggestions from David Ahern: - Added -c to perf script - Check that SAMPLE_CPU is set when -c is used - Update documentation v3: Create perf_session__cpu_bitmap() Signed-off-by: Anton Blanchard <anton@samba.org> Acked-by: David Ahern <dsahern@gmail.com> Cc: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@ghostprotocols.net> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <a.p.zijlstra@chello.nl> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20110704215750.11647eb9@kryten Signed-off-by: Ingo Molnar <mingo@elte.hu>

* perf session: Pass evsel in event_ops->sample()Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo2011-03-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Resolving the sample->id to an evsel since the most advanced tools, report and annotate, and the others will too when they evolve to properly support multi-event perf.data files. Good also because it does an extra validation, checking that the ID is valid when present. When that is not the case, the overhead is just a branch + function call (perf_evlist__id2evsel). * perf tools: Improve support for sessions with multiple eventsArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2011-03-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | By creating an perf_evlist out of the attributes in the perf.data file header, so that we can use evlists and evsels when reading recorded sessions in addition to when we record sessions. More work is needed to allow tools to allow the user to select which events are wanted when browsing sessions, be it just one or a subset of them, aggregated or showed at the same time but with different indications on the UI to allow seeing workloads thru different views at the same time. But the overall goal/trend is to more uniformly use evsels and evlists. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Since we'll need it when implementing the live annotate TUI browser. * perf annotate: Move annotate functions to util/Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo2011-02-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | They will be used by perf top, so that we have just one set of routines to do annotation. Rename "struct sym_priv" to "struct annotation", etc, to clarify this code a bit. Rename "struct sym_ext" to "struct source_line", to give it a meaningful name, that clarifies that it is a the result of an addr2line call, that is sorted by percentage one particular source code line appeared in the annotation. And since we're moving things around also rename 'sym_hist->ip' to 'sym_hist->addr' as we want to do data structure annotation at some point. * perf record, report, annotate, diff: Process events in orderIan Munsie2010-12-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch changes perf report to ask for the ID info on all events be default if recording from multiple CPUs. Perf report, annotate and diff will now process the events in order if the kernel is able to provide timestamps on all events. This ensures that events such as COMM and MMAP which are necessary to correctly interpret samples are processed prior to those samples so that they are attributed correctly. * perf session: Fallback to unordered processing if no sample_id_allIan Munsie2010-12-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If we are running the new perf on an old kernel without support for sample_id_all, we should fall back to the old unordered processing of events. If we didn't than we would *always* process events without timestamps out of order, whether or not we hit a reordering race. In other words, instead of there being a chance of not attributing samples correctly, we would guarantee that samples would not be attributed. While processing all events without timestamps before events with timestamps may seem like an intuitive solution, it falls down as PERF_RECORD_EXIT events would also be processed before any samples. Even with a workaround for that case, samples before/after an exec would not be attributed correctly. This patch allows commands to indicate whether they need to fall back to unordered processing, so that commands that do not care about timestamps on every event will not be affected. If we do fallback, this will print out a warning if report -D was invoked. This patch adds the test in perf_session__new so that we only need to test once per session. Commands that do not use an event_ops (such as record and top) can simply pass NULL in it's place. * perf session: Parse sample earlierArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2010-12-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | At perf_session__process_event, so that we reduce the number of lines in eache tool sample processing routine that now receives a sample_data pointer already parsed. This will also be useful in the next patch, where we'll allow sample the identity fields in MMAP, FORK, EXIT, etc, when it will be possible to see (cpu, timestamp) just after before every event. Also validate callchains in perf_session__process_event, i.e. as early as possible, and keep a counter of the number of events discarded due to invalid callchains, warning the user about it if it happens. There is an assumption that was kept that all events have the same sample_type, that will be dealt with in the future, when this preexisting limitation will be removed. * perf report: Librarize the annotation code and use it in the newt browserArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2010-05-11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now we don't anymore use popen to run 'perf annotate' for the selected symbol, instead we collect per address samplings when processing samples in 'perf report' if we're using the newt browser, then we use this data directly to do annotation. Done this way we can actually traverse the objdump_line objects directly, matching the addresses to the collected samples and colouring them appropriately using lower level slang routines. The new ui_browser class will be reused for the main, callchain aware, histogram browser, when it will be made generic and don't assume that the objects are always instances of the objdump_line class maintained using list_heads. * perf hist: Introduce hists class and move lots of methods to itArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2010-05-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In cbbc79a we introduced support for multiple events by introducing a new "event_stat_id" struct and then made several perf_session methods receive a point to it instead of a pointer to perf_session, and kept the event_stats and hists rb_tree in perf_session. While working on the new newt based browser, I realised that it would be better to introduce a new class, "hists" (short for "histograms"), renaming the "event_stat_id" struct and the perf_session methods that were really "hists" methods, as they manipulate only struct hists members, not touching anything in the other perf_session members. Other optimizations, such as calculating the maximum lenght of a symbol name present in an hists instance will be possible as we add them, avoiding a re-traversal just for finding that information. The rationale for the name "hists" to replace "event_stat_id" is that we may have multiple sets of hists for the same event_stat id, as, for instance, the 'perf diff' tool has, so event stat id is not what characterizes what this struct and the functions that manipulate it do. * perf hist: Simplify the insertion of new hist_entry instancesArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2010-05-09
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | And with that fix at least one bug: The first hit for an entry, the one that calls malloc to create a new instance in __perf_session__add_hist_entry, wasn't adding the count to the per cpumode (PERF_RECORD_MISC_USER, etc) total variable. * perf: add perf-inject builtinTom Zanussi2010-05-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, perf 'live mode' writes build-ids at the end of the session, which isn't actually useful for processing live mode events. What would be better would be to have the build-ids sent before any of the samples that reference them, which can be done by processing the event stream and retrieving the build-ids on the first hit. Doing that in perf-record itself, however, is off-limits. This patch introduces perf-inject, which does the same job while leaving perf-record untouched. Normal mode perf still records the build-ids at the end of the session as it should, but for live mode, perf-inject can be injected in between the record and report steps e.g.: perf record -o - ./hackbench 10 | perf inject -v -b | perf report -v -i - perf-inject reads a perf-record event stream and repipes it to stdout. At any point the processing code can inject other events into the event stream - in this case build-ids (-b option) are read and injected as needed into the event stream. Build-ids are just the first user of perf-inject - potentially anything that needs userspace processing to augment the trace stream with additional information could make use of this facility. * perf: Fix endianness argument compatibility with OPT_BOOLEAN() and introduce ↵Ian Munsie2010-04-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | OPT_INCR() Parsing an option from the command line with OPT_BOOLEAN on a bool data type would not work on a big-endian machine due to the manner in which the boolean was being cast into an int and incremented. For example, running 'perf probe --list' on a PowerPC machine would fail to properly set the list_events bool and would therefore print out the usage information and terminate. This patch makes OPT_BOOLEAN work as expected with a bool datatype. For cases where the original OPT_BOOLEAN was intentionally being used to increment an int each time it was passed in on the command line, this patch introduces OPT_INCR with the old behaviour of OPT_BOOLEAN (the verbose variable is currently the only such example of this). I have reviewed every use of OPT_BOOLEAN to verify that a true C99 bool was passed. Where integers were used, I verified that they were only being used for boolean logic and changed them to bools to ensure that they would not be mistakenly used as ints. The major exception was the verbose variable which now uses OPT_INCR instead of OPT_BOOLEAN. Signed-off-by: Ian Munsie <imunsie@au.ibm.com> Acked-by: David S. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The problem was we were incorrectly calculating objdump addresses for sym->start and sym->end, look: For simple ET_DYN type DSO (*.so) with one function, objdump -dS output is something like this: 000004ac <my_strlen>: int my_strlen(const char *s) 4ac: 55 push %ebp 4ad: 89 e5 mov %esp,%ebp 4af: 83 ec 10 sub $0x10,%esp { i.e. we have relative-to-dso-mapping IPs (=RIP) there. For ET_EXEC type and probably for prelinked libs as well (sorry can't test - I don't use prelink) objdump outputs absolute IPs, e.g. 08048604 <zz_strlen>: extern "C" int zz_strlen(const char *s) 8048604: 55 push %ebp 8048605: 89 e5 mov %esp,%ebp 8048607: 83 ec 10 sub $0x10,%esp { So, if sym->start is always relative to dso mapping(*), we'll have to unmap it for ET_EXEC like cases, and leave as is for ET_DYN cases. (*) and it is - we've explicitely made it relative. Look for adjust_symbols handling in dso__load_sym() Previously we were always unmapping sym->start and for ET_DYN dsos resulting addresses were wrong, and so objdump output was empty. The end result was that perf annotate output for symbols from non-prelinked *.so had always 0.00% percents only, which is wrong. To fix it, let's introduce a helper for converting rip to objdump address, and also let's document what map_ip() and unmap_ip() do -- I had to study sources for several hours to understand it.
