* [NET]: Rework dev_base via list_head (v3)Pavel Emelianov2007-05-03
| | | | | | | | | | | | Cleanup of dev_base list use, with the aim to simplify making device list per-namespace. In almost every occasion, use of dev_base variable and dev->next pointer could be easily replaced by for_each_netdev loop. A few most complicated places were converted to using first_netdev()/next_netdev(). * [RTNETLINK]: Remove unnecessary locking in dump callbacksPatrick McHardy2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | Since we're now holding the rtnl during the entire dump operation, we can remove additional locking for rtnl protected data. This patch does that for all simple cases (dev_base_lock for dev_base walking, RCU protection for FIB rule dumping). Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* [NETLINK]: Switch cb_lock spinlock to mutex and allow to override itPatrick McHardy2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | Switch cb_lock to mutex and allow netlink kernel users to override it with a subsystem specific mutex for consistent locking in dump callbacks. All netlink_dump_start users have been audited not to rely on any side-effects of the previously used spinlock. Signed-off-by: Patrick McHardy <kaber@trash.net> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

* [SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_copy_from_linear_data{_offset}Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo2007-04-26
| | | | | | | To clearly state the intent of copying from linear sk_buffs, _offset being a overly long variant but interesting for the sake of saving some bytes. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com>
* [NET] fib_rules: Flush route cache after rule modificationsThomas Graf2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The results of FIB rules lookups are cached in the routing cache except for IPv6 as no such cache exists. So far, it was the responsibility of the user to flush the cache after modifying any rules. This lead to many false bug reports due to misunderstanding of this concept. This patch automatically flushes the route cache after inserting or deleting a rule. Thanks to Muli Ben-Yehuda <muli@il.ibm.com> for catching a bug in the previous patch. * [NET] rules: Unified rules dumpingThomas Graf2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | Implements a unified, protocol independant rules dumping function which is capable of both, dumping a specific protocol family or all of them. This speeds up dumping as less lookups are required. Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

* [NETLINK]: Introduce nlmsg_hdr() helperArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | For the common "(struct nlmsghdr *)skb->data" sequence, so that we reduce the number of direct accesses to skb->data and for consistency with all the other cast skb member helpers. * [SK_BUFF]: Convert skb->tail to sk_buff_data_tArnaldo Carvalho de Melo2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | So that it is also an offset from skb->head, reduces its size from 8 to 4 bytes on 64bit architectures, allowing us to combine the 4 bytes hole left by the layer headers conversion, reducing struct sk_buff size to 256 bytes, i.e. 4 64byte cachelines, and since the sk_buff slab cache is SLAB_HWCACHE_ALIGN... :-) Many calculations that previously required that skb->{transport,network, mac}_header be first converted to a pointer now can be done directly, being meaningful as offsets or pointers. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
* [SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_reset_transport_header(skb)Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | For the common, open coded 'skb->h.raw = skb->data' operation, so that we can later turn skb->h.raw into a offset, reducing the size of struct sk_buff in 64bit land while possibly keeping it as a pointer on 32bit. This one touches just the most simple cases: skb->h.raw = skb->data; skb->h.raw = {skb_push|[__]skb_pull}() The next ones will handle the slightly more "complex" cases. * [SK_BUFF]: Introduce skb_network_header()Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | For the places where we need a pointer to the network header, it is still legal to touch skb->nh.raw directly if just adding to, subtracting from or setting it to another layer header. * [DECNet] fib: Fix out of bound access of dn_fib_props[]Thomas Graf2007-03-25
| | | | | | | | | | Fixes a typo which caused fib_props[] to have the wrong size and makes sure the value used to index the array which is provided by userspace via netlink is checked to avoid out of bound access. * [NET]: Fix fib_rules compatibility breakageThomas Graf2007-03-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Based upon a patch from Patrick McHardy. The fib_rules netlink attribute policy introduced in 2.6.19 broke userspace compatibilty. When specifying a rule with "from all" or "to all", iproute adds a zero byte long netlink attribute, but the policy requires all addresses to have a size equal to sizeof(struct in_addr)/sizeof(struct in6_addr), resulting in a validation error. Check attribute length of FRA_SRC/FRA_DST in the generic framework by letting the family specific rules implementation provide the length of an address. Report an error if address length is non zero but no address attribute is provided. Fix actual bug by checking address length for non-zero instead of relying on availability of attribute. * [PATCH] sysctl: remove the proc_dir_entry member for the sysctl tablesEric W. Biederman2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | It isn't needed anymore, all of the users are gone, and all of the ctl_table initializers have been converted to use explicit names of the fields they are initializing. * [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] sysctl: decnet: remove unnecessary insert_at_head flagEric W. Biederman2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | The sysctl numbers used are unique so setting the insert_at_head flag does not succeed in overriding any sysctls, and is just confusing because it doesn't. Clear the flag. * [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). * [PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 7Arjan van de Ven2007-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. * [NETLINK]: Don't BUG on undersized allocationsPatrick McHardy2007-02-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently netlink users BUG when the allocated skb for an event notification is undersized. While this is certainly a kernel bug, its not critical and crashing the kernel is too drastic, especially when considering that these errors have appeared multiple times in the past and it BUGs even if no listeners are present. This patch replaces BUG by WARN_ON and changes the notification functions to inform potential listeners of undersized allocations using a unique error code (EMSGSIZE). * [NET]: Rethink mark field in struct flowiThomas Graf2006-12-03
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that all protocols have been made aware of the mark field it can be moved out of the union thus simplyfing its usage. The config options in the IPv4/IPv6/DECnet subsystems to enable respectively disable mark based routing only obfuscate the code with ifdefs, the cost for the additional comparison in the flow key is insignificant, and most distributions have all these options enabled by default anyway. Therefore it makes sense to remove the config options and enable mark based routing by default. Signed-off-by: Thomas Graf <tgraf@suug.ch> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
