(timers)
This patch allows torturing RCU from irq handlers (timers, in this case).
A new module parameter irqreader enables such additional torturing,
and is enabled by default. Variants of RCU that do not tolerate readers
being called from irq handlers (e.g., SRCU) ignore irqreader.

This patch aligns the rcutorture wakeup times to align with all other

This patch re-institutes the ability to build rcutorture directly into
the Linux kernel. The reason that this capability was removed was that
this could result in your kernel being pretty much useless, as rcutorture
would be running starting from early boot. This problem has been avoided
by (1) making rcutorture run only three seconds of every six by default,
(2) adding a CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST_RUNNABLE that permits rcutorture
to be quiesced at boot time, and (3) adding a sysctl in /proc named
/proc/sys/kernel/rcutorture_runnable that permits rcutorture to be
quiesced and unquiesced when built into the kernel.
Please note that this /proc file is -not- available when rcutorture
is built as a module. Please also note that to get the earlier
take-no-prisoners behavior, you must use the boot command line to set
rcutorture's "stutter" parameter to zero.
The rcutorture quiescing mechanism is currently quite crude: loops
in each rcutorture process that poll a global variable once per tick.
Suggestions for improvement are welcome. The default action will
be to reduce the polling rate to a few times per second.

This patch takes a step towards making rcutorture more brutal by allowing
the test to be automatically periodically paused, with the default being
to run the test for five seconds then pause for five seconds and repeat.
This behavior can be controlled using a new "stutter" module parameter, so
that "stutter=0" gives the old default behavior of running continuously.
Starting and stopping rcutorture more heavily stresses RCU's interaction
with the scheduler, as well as exercising more paths through the
grace-period detection code.
Note that the default to "shuffle_interval" has also been adjusted from
5 seconds to 3 seconds to provide varying overlap with the "stutter"
interval.
I am still unable to provoke the failures that Alexey has been seeing,
even with this patch, but will be doing a few additional things to beef
up rcutorture.

Following an experimental deletion of the unnecessary directive
#include <linux/slab.h>
from the header file <linux/percpu.h>, these files under kernel/ were exposed
as needing to include one of <linux/slab.h> or <linux/gfp.h>, so explicit
includes were added where necessary.

which instead of passing the "newly allowed cpus" cpumask_t arg

Replace all lock_cpu_hotplug/unlock_cpu_hotplug from the kernel and use
get_online_cpus and put_online_cpus instead as it highlights the
refcount semantics in these operations.
The new API guarantees protection against the cpu-hotplug operation, but
it doesn't guarantee serialized access to any of the local data
structures. Hence the changes needs to be reviewed.
In case of pseries_add_processor/pseries_remove_processor, use
cpu_maps_update_begin()/cpu_maps_update_done() as we're modifying the
cpu_present_map there.

Repost of http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/10/472 made available by request.
The locking used by get_random_bytes() can conflict with the
preempt_disable() and synchronize_sched() form of RCU. This patch changes
rcutorture's RNG to gather entropy from the new cpu_clock() interface
(relying on interrupts, preemption, daemons, and rcutorture's reader
thread's rock-bottom scheduling priority to provide useful entropy), and
also adds and EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL() to make that interface available to GPLed
kernel modules such as rcutorture.
Passes several hours of rcutorture.

Currently, the freezer treats all tasks as freezable, except for the kernel
threads that explicitly set the PF_NOFREEZE flag for themselves. This
approach is problematic, since it requires every kernel thread to either
set PF_NOFREEZE explicitly, or call try_to_freeze(), even if it doesn't
care for the freezing of tasks at all.
It seems better to only require the kernel threads that want to or need to
be frozen to use some freezer-related code and to remove any
freezer-related code from the other (nonfreezable) kernel threads, which is
done in this patch.
The patch causes all kernel threads to be nonfreezable by default (ie. to
have PF_NOFREEZE set by default) and introduces the set_freezable()
function that should be called by the freezable kernel threads in order to
unset PF_NOFREEZE. It also makes all of the currently freezable kernel
threads call set_freezable(), so it shouldn't cause any (intentional)
change of behaviour to appear. Additionally, it updates documentation to
describe the freezing of tasks more accurately.

rcutorture's module parameters currently use permissions of 0, so they
don't show up in /sys/module/rcutorture/parameters. Change the permissions
on all module parameters to world-readable (0444).
rcutorture does all of its initialization and thread startup when loaded
and relies on the parameters not changing during execution, so they should
not permit writing. However, reading seems fine.

rcutorture currently has one writer and an arbitrary number of readers. To
better exercise some of the code paths in RCU implementations, add fake
writer threads which call the synchronize function for the RCU variant in a
loop, with a delay between calls to arrange for different numbers of
writers running in parallel.

rcu_random uses a counter rrs_count to occasionally mix data from
get_random_bytes into the state of its pseudorandom generator. However,
the rrs_counter gets declared as an unsigned long, and rcu_random checks
for --rrs_count < 0, so this code will never mix any real random data into
the state, and will thus always return the same sequence of random numbers.
Also, change the return value of rcu_random from long to unsigned long, to
avoid potential issues caused by the use of the % operator, which can
return negative values for negative left operands.

startup fails
rcu_torture_init kmallocs the array of reader threads, then creates each
one with kthread_run, cleaning up with rcu_torture_cleanup if this fails.
rcu_torture_cleanup calls kthread_stop on any non-NULL pointer in the
array; however, any readers after the one that failed to start up will have
invalid pointers, not null pointers. Avoid this by using kzalloc instead.

This patch contains the following cleanups:
- make needlessly global functions static
- every file should include the headers containing the prototypes for
it's global functions

While doing some test of RCU torture module, I hit a OOPS in rcu_do_batch,
which was trying to processes callback of a module that was just removed.
This is because we weren't waiting long enough for all callbacks to fire.

One issue with the RCU torture test is that the current error flagging can
be lost in dmesg. This patch adds a "SUCCESS"/"FAILURE" string to the line
that flags the end of the test, where it can easily be seen with "dmesg |
tail" at the end of the test. Also adds tests of architecture-specific
memory barriers -- or, more likely, of the RCU torture test itself.

Make the box usable for interactive work when running the RCU torture test,
by renicing the RCU torture-test threads to +19 by default. Kthreads run
at nice -5 by default.

This patch is a rewrite of the one submitted on October 1st, using modules
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=112819093522998&w=2).
This rewrite adds a tristate CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST, which enables an
intense torture test of the RCU infratructure. This is needed due to the
continued changes to the RCU infrastructure to accommodate dynamic ticks,
CPU hotplug, realtime, and so on. Most of the code is in a separate file
that is compiled only if the CONFIG variable is set. Documentation on how
to run the test and interpret the output is also included.
This code has been tested on i386 and ppc64, and an earlier version of the
code has received extensive testing on a number of architectures as part of
the PREEMPT_RT patchset.
