* Add CONFIG_DEBUG_SG sg validationJens Axboe2007-10-22
| | | | | | | Add a Kconfig entry which will toggle some sanity checks on the sg entry and tables. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>
* Change table chaining layoutJens Axboe2007-10-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change the page member of the scatterlist structure to be an unsigned long, and encode more stuff in the lower bits: - Bits 0 and 1 zero: this is a normal sg entry. Next sg entry is located at sg + 1. - Bit 0 set: this is a chain entry, the next real entry is at ->page_link with the two low bits masked off. - Bit 1 set: this is the final entry in the sg entry. sg_next() will return NULL when passed such an entry. It's thus important that sg table users use the proper accessors to get and set the page member. Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <jens.axboe@oracle.com>

* forbid asm/bitops.h direct inclusionJiri Slaby2007-10-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | forbid asm/bitops.h direct inclusion Because of compile errors that may occur after bit changes if asm/bitops.h is included directly without e.g. linux/kernel.h which includes linux/bitops.h, forbid direct inclusion of asm/bitops.h. * Remove dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) functionsRalf Baechle2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. The API has suffered from a lack of documentation, was not very widely used unlike it's more modern brothers and can easily be replaced by dma_cache_sync. So remove it rsp. turn the surviving bits back into an arch private API, as discussed on linux-arch. | | | | | | | | | | | | All asm/ipc.h files do only #include <asm-generic/ipc.h>. * remove strict ansi check from __u64 in asm/types.hOlaf Hering2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the __STRICT_ANSI__ check from the __u64/__s64 declaration on 32bit targets. GCC can be made to warn about usage of long long types with ISO C90 (-ansi), but only with -pedantic. You can write this in a way that even then it doesn't cause warnings, namely by: #ifdef __GNUC__ __extension__ typedef __signed__ long long __s64; __extension__ typedef unsigned long long __u64; #endif The __extension__ keyword in front of this switches off any pedantic warnings for this expression. * kill DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKEDChristoph Hellwig2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKED was used for semaphores used as completions and we've got rid of them. Well, except for one in libusual that the maintainer explicitly wants to keep as semaphore. So convert that useage to an explicit sema_init and kill of DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKED so that new code is reminded to use a completion. |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This finally renames the thread_info field in task structure to stack, so that the assumptions about this field are gone and archs have more freedom about placing the thread_info structure. Nonbroken archs which have a proper thread pointer can do the access to both current thread and task structure via a single pointer. It'll allow for a few more cleanups of the fork code, from which e.g. ia64 could benefit. * atomic.h: atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular ↵Mathieu Desnoyers2007-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dependency atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. I agree (with Andi Kleen) this typeof is not needed and more error prone. All the original atomic.h code that uses cmpxchg (which includes the atomic_add_unless) uses defines instead of inline functions, probably to circumvent a circular dependency between system.h and atomic.h on powerpc (which my patch addresses). Therefore, it makes sense to use inline functions that will provide type checking. atomic_add_unless as inline. Remove system.h atomic.h circular dependency. Digging into the FRV architecture shows me that it is also affected by such a circular dependency. Here is the diff applying this against the rest of my atomic.h patches. It applies over the atomic.h standardization patches. * Clean up mostly unused IOSPACE macrosDavid Gibson2007-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Most architectures defined three macros, MK_IOSPACE_PFN(), GET_IOSPACE() and GET_PFN() in pgtable.h. However, the only callers of any of these macros are in Sparc specific code, either in arch/sparc, arch/sparc64 or drivers/sbus. This patch removes the redundant macros from all architectures except sparc and sparc64. * move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig2007-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. | * [PATCH] x86: PARAVIRT: add hooks to intercept mm creation and destructionJeremy Fitzhardinge2007-05-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. * [NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. * [NET]: Introduce SIOCGSTAMPNS ioctl to get timestamps with nanosec resolutionEric Dumazet2007-04-26
