* paravirt: add a hook for once the allocator is readyJeremy Fitzhardinge2007-07-18
| | | | | | | | | Add a hook so that the paravirt backend knows when the allocator is ready. This is useful for the obvious reason that the allocator is available, but the other side-effect of having the bootmem allocator available is that each page now has an associated "struct page". * Make struct boot_params a real structure, and remove obsolete fieldsH. Peter Anvin2007-07-12
| | | | | | | | | | Make struct boot_params a real structure, and remove the handling of some obsolete fields, in particular hd*_info, which was only used by the ST-506 driver, and likely to be wrong for that driver on any modern BIOS. * [PATCH] i386: 2048-byte command lineAlon Bar-Lev2007-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementation allows the kernel to receive up to 255 characters from the bootloader. While the boot protocol allows greater buffers to be sent. In current environment, the command-line is used in order to specify many values, including suspend/resume, module arguments, splash, initramfs and more. 255 characters are not enough anymore. After edd issue was fixed, and dynammic kernel command-line patch was accepted, we can extend the COMMAND_LINE_SIZE without runtime memory requirements. | * [PATCH] paravirt: header and stubs for paravirtualisationRusty Russell2006-12-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create a paravirt.h header for all the critical operations which need to be replaced with hypervisor calls, and include that instead of defining native operations, when CONFIG_PARAVIRT. This patch does the dumbest possible replacement of paravirtualized instructions: calls through a "paravirt_ops" structure. Currently these are function implementations of native hardware: hypervisors will override the ops structure with their own variants. All the pv-ops functions are declared "fastcall" so that a specific register-based ABI is used, to make inlining assember easier. And: +From: Andy Whitcroft <apw@shadowen.org> The paravirt ops introduce a 'weak' attribute onto memory_setup(). Code ordering leads to the following warnings on x86: arch/i386/kernel/setup.c:651: warning: weak declaration of `memory_setup' after first use results in unspecified behavior Move memory_setup() to avoid this. * | [PATCH] cleanup asm/setup.h userspace visibilityAdrian Bunk2006-12-07
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make the contents of the userspace asm/setup.h header consistent on all architectures: - export setup.h to userspace on all architectures - export only COMMAND_LINE_SIZE to userspace - frv: move COMMAND_LINE_SIZE from param.h - i386: remove duplicate COMMAND_LINE_SIZE from param.h - arm: - export ATAGs to userspace - change u8/u16/u32 to __u8/__u16/__u32 Signed-off-by: Adrian Bunk <bunk@stusta.de> Acked-by: Russell King <rmk@arm.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] headers_check: don't expose PFN stuff to userspace in <asm-i386/setup.h>David Woodhouse2006-09-13
| | | | | | | | | | | The header file <linux/pfn.h> doesn't exist in userspace and probably shouldn't -- but it's used unconditionally in <asm-i386/setup.h>. * [PATCH] Clean up and refactor i386 sub-architecture setupJeremy Fitzhardinge2006-06-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Clean up and refactor i386 sub-architecture setup. This change moves all the code from the asm-i386/mach-*/setup_arch_pre/post.h headers, into arch/i386/mach-*/setup.c. mach-*/setup_arch_pre.h is renamed to setup_arch.h, and contains only things which should be in header files. It is purely code-motion; there should be no functional changes at all. Several functions in arch/i386/kernel/setup.c needed to be made non-static so that they're visible to the code in mach-*/setup.c. asm-i386/setup.h is used to hold the prototypes for these functions. * [PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen2006-03-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. * [PATCH] x86: fix EFI memory map parsingMatt Tolentino2005-09-05
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The memory descriptors that comprise the EFI memory map are not fixed in stone such that the size could change in the future. This uses the memory descriptor size obtained from EFI to iterate over the memory map entries during boot. This enables the removal of an x86 specific pad (and ifdef) in the EFI header. I also couldn't stomach the broken up nature of the function to put EFI runtime calls into virtual mode any longer so I fixed that up a bit as well. For reference, this patch only impacts x86. * [PATCH] Increase number of e820 entries hard limit from 32 to 128Venkatesh Pallipadi2005-05-01
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The specifications that talk about E820 map doesn't have an upper limit on the number of e820 entries. But, today's kernel has a hard limit of 32. With increase in memory size, we are seeing the number of E820 entries reaching close to 32. Patch below bumps the number upto 128. The patch changes the location of EDDBUF in zero-page (as it comes after E820). As, EDDBUF is not used by boot loaders, this patch should not have any effect on bootloader-setup code interface. Patch covers both i386 and x86-64. Tested on: * grub booting bzImage * lilo booting bzImage with EDID info enabled * pxeboot of bzImage Side-effect: bss increases by ~ 2K and init.data increases by ~7.5K on all systems, due to increase in size of static arrays. * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-16
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
