* Remove dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) functionsRalf Baechle2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | dma_cache_(wback|inv|wback_inv) were the earliest attempt on a generalized cache managment API for I/O purposes. Originally it was basically the raw MIPS low level cache API exported to the entire world. The API has suffered from a lack of documentation, was not very widely used unlike it's more modern brothers and can easily be replaced by dma_cache_sync. So remove it rsp. turn the surviving bits back into an arch private API, as discussed on linux-arch. * remove include/asm-*/ipc.hAdrian Bunk2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | All asm/ipc.h files do only #include <asm-generic/ipc.h>. This patch therefore removes all include/asm-*/ipc.h files and moves the contents of include/asm-generic/ipc.h to include/linux/ipc.h. * remove strict ansi check from __u64 in asm/types.hOlaf Hering2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove the __STRICT_ANSI__ check from the __u64/__s64 declaration on 32bit targets. GCC can be made to warn about usage of long long types with ISO C90 (-ansi), but only with -pedantic. You can write this in a way that even then it doesn't cause warnings, namely by: #ifdef __GNUC__ __extension__ typedef __signed__ long long __s64; __extension__ typedef unsigned long long __u64; #endif The __extension__ keyword in front of this switches off any pedantic warnings for this expression. * kill DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKEDChristoph Hellwig2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKED was used for semaphores used as completions and we've got rid of them. Well, except for one in libusual that the maintainer explicitly wants to keep as semaphore. So convert that useage to an explicit sema_init and kill of DECLARE_MUTEX_LOCKED so that new code is reminded to use a completion. * Binfmt_flat: Add minimum support for the Blackfin relocationsBernd Schmidt2007-10-03
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add minimum support for the Blackfin relocations, since we don't have enough space in each reloc. The idea is to store a value with one relocation so that subsequent ones can access it. Actually, this patch is required for Blackfin. * Add __GFP_MOVABLE for callers to flag allocations from high memory that may ↵Mel Gorman2007-07-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | be migrated It is often known at allocation time whether a page may be migrated or not. This patch adds a flag called __GFP_MOVABLE and a new mask called GFP_HIGH_MOVABLE. Allocations using the __GFP_MOVABLE can be either migrated using the page migration mechanism or reclaimed by syncing with backing storage and discarding. An API function very similar to alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is added for __GFP_MOVABLE allocations called alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(). The flags used by alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() are not changed because it would change the semantics of an existing API. After this patch is applied there are no in-kernel users of alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() so it probably should be marked deprecated if this patch is merged. Note that this patch includes a minor cleanup to the use of __GFP_ZERO in shmem.c to keep all flag modifications to inode->mapping in the shmem_dir_alloc() helper function. This clean-up suggestion is courtesy of Hugh Dickens. Additional credit goes to Christoph Lameter and Linus Torvalds for shaping the concept. * dma-mapping: prevent dma dependent code from linking on !HAS_DMA archsDan Williams2007-07-16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Continuing the work started in 411f0f3edc141a582190d3605cadd1d993abb6df ... This enables code with a dma path, that compiles away, to build without requiring additional code factoring. It also prevents code that calls dma_alloc_coherent and dma_free_coherent from linking whereas previously the code would hit a BUG() at run time. Finally, it allows archs that set !HAS_DMA to delete their asm/dma-mapping.h file. * move die notifier handling to common codeChristoph Hellwig2007-05-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch moves the die notifier handling to common code. Previous various architectures had exactly the same code for it. Note that the new code is compiled unconditionally, this should be understood as an appel to the other architecture maintainer to implement support for it aswell (aka sprinkling a notify_die or two in the proper place) arm had a notifiy_die that did something totally different, I renamed it to arm_notify_die as part of the patch and made it static to the file it's declared and used at. avr32 used to pass slightly less information through this interface and I brought it into line with the other architectures. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add hooks to allow a paravirt implementation to track the lifetime of an mm. Paravirtualization requires three hooks, but only two are needed in common code. They are: arch_dup_mmap, which is called when a new mmap is created at fork arch_exit_mmap, which is called when the last process reference to an mm is dropped, which typically happens on exit and exec. The third hook is activate_mm, which is called from the arch-specific activate_mm() macro/function, and so doesn't need stub versions for other architectures. It's called when an mm is first used. * [NET]: Adding SO_TIMESTAMPNS / SCM_TIMESTAMPNS supportEric Dumazet2007-04-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that network timestamps use ktime_t infrastructure, we can add a new SOL_SOCKET sockopt SO_TIMESTAMPNS. This command is similar to SO_TIMESTAMP, but permits transmission of a 'timespec struct' instead of a 'timeval struct' control message. (nanosecond resolution instead of microsecond) Control message is labelled SCM_TIMESTAMPNS instead of SCM_TIMESTAMP A socket cannot mix SO_TIMESTAMP and SO_TIMESTAMPNS : the two modes are mutually exclusive. sock_recv_timestamp() became too big to be fully inlined so I added a __sock_recv_timestamp() helper function. * [PATCH] consolidate line discipline number definitionsTilman Schmidt2007-02-11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The line discipline numbers N_* are currently defined for each architecture individually, but (except for a seeming mistake) identically, in asm/termios.h. There is no obvious reason why these numbers should be architecture specific, nor any apparent relationship with the termios structure. The total number of these, NR_LDISCS, is defined in linux/tty.h anyway. So I propose the following patch which moves the definitions of the individual line disciplines to linux/tty.h too. Three of these numbers (N_MASC, N_PROFIBUS_FDL, and N_SMSBLOCK) are unused in the current kernel, but the patch still keeps the complete set in case there are plans to use them yet. * [PATCH] tty: preparatory structures for termios revampAlan Cox2006-12-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In order to sort out our struct termios and add proper speed control we need to separate the kernel and user termios structures. Glibc is fine but the other libraries rely on the kernel exported struct termios and we need to extend this without breaking the ABI/API To do so we add a struct ktermios which is the kernel view of a termios structure and overlaps the struct termios with extra fields on the end for now. (That limitation will go away in later patches). Some platforms (eg alpha) planned ahead and thus use the same struct for both, others did not. This just adds the structures but does not use them, it seems a sensible splitting point for bisect if there are compile failures (not that I expect them) Signed-off-by: Alan Cox <alan@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | "extern inline" generates a warning with -Wmissing-prototypes and I'm currently working on getting the kernel cleaned up for adding this to the CFLAGS since it will help us to avoid a nasty class of runtime errors. * [PATCH] Centralise definitions of sector_t and blkcnt_tMatthew Wilcox2006-12-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | CONFIG_LBD and CONFIG_LSF are spread into asm/types.h for no particularly good reason. Centralising the definition in linux/types.h means that arch maintainers don't need to bother adding it, as well as fixing the problem with x86-64 users being asked to make a decision that has absolutely no effect. The H8/300 porters seem particularly confused since I'm not aware of any microcontrollers that need to support 2TB filesystems. * [PATCH] remove remaining errno and __KERNEL_SYSCALLS__ referencesArnd Bergmann2006-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The last in-kernel user of errno is gone, so we should remove the definition and everything referring to it. This also removes the now-unused lib/execve.c file that was introduced earlier. Also remove every trace of __KERNEL_SYSCALLS__ that still remained in the kernel. * [PATCH] remove set_wmb - arch removalSteven Rostedt2006-07-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | set_wmb should not be used in the kernel because it just confuses the code more and has no benefit. Since it is not currently used in the kernel this patch removes it so that new code does not include it. All archs define set_wmb(var, value) to do { var = value; wmb(); } while(0) except ia64 and sparc which use a mb() instead. But this is still moot since it is not used anyway. Hasn't been tested on any archs but x86 and x86_64 (and only compiled tested) Signed-off-by: Steven Rostedt <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] Make cpu_relax() imply barrier() on all archesChase Venters2006-07-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | During the recent discussion of taking 'volatile' off of the spinlock, I noticed that while most arches #define cpu_relax() such that it implies barrier(), some arches define cpu_relax() to be empty. This patch changes the definition of cpu_relax() for frv, h8300, m68knommu, sh, sh64, v850 and xtensa from an empty while(0) to the compiler barrier(). * | [AF_UNIX]: Datagram getpeersecCatherine Zhang2006-06-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg. Patch purpose: This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket. The application can then use this security context to determine the security context for processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet. Patch design and implementation: The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET sockets. Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for retrieving user credentials. Linux offers the API for obtaining user credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages that are bundled together with a normal message). To retrieve the security context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt. Then the application retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism. An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this: toggle = 1; toggle_len = sizeof(toggle); setsockopt(sockfd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_PASSSEC, &toggle, &toggle_len); recvmsg(sockfd, &msg_hdr, 0); if (msg_hdr.msg_controllen > sizeof(struct cmsghdr)) { cmsg_hdr = CMSG_FIRSTHDR(&msg_hdr); if (cmsg_hdr->cmsg_len <= CMSG_LEN(sizeof(scontext)) && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_level == SOL_SOCKET && cmsg_hdr->cmsg_type == SCM_SECURITY) { memcpy(&scontext, CMSG_DATA(cmsg_hdr), sizeof(scontext)); } } sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow a server socket to receive security context of the peer. Testing: We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server applications. We verified that the server can retrieve the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg.
