* [PATCH] relative atimeValerie Henson2006-12-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add "relatime" (relative atime) support. Relative atime only updates the atime if the previous atime is older than the mtime or ctime. Like noatime, but useful for applications like mutt that need to know when a file has been read since it was last modified. A corresponding patch against mount(8) is available at http://userweb.kernel.org/~akpm/mount-relative-atime.txt Signed-off-by: Valerie Henson <val_henson@linux.intel.com> Cc: Mark Fasheh <mark.fasheh@oracle.com> Cc: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Cc: Karel Zak <kzak@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] rename struct namespace to struct mnt_namespaceKirill Korotaev2006-12-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rename 'struct namespace' to 'struct mnt_namespace' to avoid confusion with other namespaces being developped for the containers : pid, uts, ipc, etc. 'namespace' variables and attributes are also renamed to 'mnt_ns' Signed-off-by: Kirill Korotaev <dev@sw.ru> Signed-off-by: Cedric Le Goater <clg@fr.ibm.com> Cc: Eric W. * [PATCH] slab: remove kmem_cache_tChristoph Lameter2006-12-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Replace all uses of kmem_cache_t with struct kmem_cache. The patch was generated using the following script: #!/bin/sh # # Replace one string by another in all the kernel sources. # set -e for file in `find * -name "*.c" -o -name "*.h"|xargs grep -l $1`; do quilt add $file sed -e "1,\$s/$1/$2/g" $file >/tmp/$$ mv /tmp/$$ $file quilt refresh done The script was run like this sh replace kmem_cache_t "struct kmem_cache" Signed-off-by: Christoph Lameter <clameter@sgi.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] namespaces: incorporate fs namespace into nsproxySerge E. Hallyn2006-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This moves the mount namespace into the nsproxy. The mount namespace count now refers to the number of nsproxies point to it, rather than the number of tasks. As a result, the unshare_namespace() function in kernel/fork.c no longer checks whether it is being shared. | * [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mountDavid Howells2006-06-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint. The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt() which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour). The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the superblock pointer. This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root and mnt_sb would be set directly. The patch also makes the following changes: (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change very little. (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb(). (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon(). This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root, and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in dentries being left unculled. However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries with child trees. [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree. (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation. * [PATCH] Use __read_mostly on some hot fs variablesEric Dumazet2006-03-26
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | I discovered on oprofile hunting on a SMP platform that dentry lookups were slowed down because d_hash_mask, d_hash_shift and dentry_hashtable were in a cache line that contained inodes_stat. So each time inodes_stats is changed by a cpu, other cpus have to refill their cache line. This patch moves some variables to the __read_mostly section, in order to avoid false sharing. RCU dentry lookups can go full speed. Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <dada1@cosmosbay.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* VFS: New /proc file /proc/self/mountstatsChuck Lever2006-03-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create a new file under /proc/self, called mountstats, where mounted file systems can export information (configuration options, performance counters, and so on). Use a mechanism similar to /proc/mounts and s_ops->show_options. This mechanism does not violate namespace security, and is safe to use while other processes are unmounting file systems. Thanks to Mike Waychison for his review and comments. Test-plan: Test concurrent mount/unmount operations while cat'ing /proc/self/mountstats. * [PATCH] per-mountpoint noatime/nodiratimeChristoph Hellwig2006-01-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Turn noatime and nodiratime into per-mount instead of per-sb flags. After all the preparations this is a rather trivial patch. The mount code needs to treat the two options as per-mount instead of per-superblock, and touch_atime needs to be changed to check the new MNT_ flags in addition to the MS_ flags that are kept for filesystems that are always noatime/nodiratime but not user settable anymore. Besides that core code only nfs needed an update because it's leaving atime updates to the server and thus sets the S_NOATIME flag on every inode, but needs to know whether it's a real noatime mount for an getattr optimization. While we're at it I've killed the IS_NOATIME/IS_NODIRATIME macros that were only used by touch_atime. * [PATCH] unbindable mountsRam Pai2005-11-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | An unbindable mount does not forward or receive propagation. Also unbindable mount disallows bind mounts. The semantics is as follows. Bind semantics: It is invalid to bind mount an unbindable mount. Move semantics: It is invalid to move an unbindable mount under shared mount. Clone-namespace semantics: If a mount is unbindable in the parent namespace, the corresponding cloned mount in the child namespace becomes unbindable too. Note: there is subtle difference, unbindable mounts cannot be bind mounted but can be cloned during clone-namespace. * [PATCH] umount_tree() locking changeRam Pai2005-11-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | umount is done under the protection of the namespace semaphore. This can lead to intresting deadlocks when the last reference to a mount is released, if filesystem code is in sufficiently nasty state. This collects all the to-be-released-mounts and releases them after releasing the namespace semaphore. That both reduces the time we are holding namespace semaphore and gets the things more robust. * [PATCH] saner handling of auto_acct_off() and DQUOT_OFF() in umountAl Viro2005-11-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The way we currently deal with quota and process accounting that might keep vfsmount busy at umount time is inherently broken; we try to turn them off just in case (not quite correctly, at that) and a) pray umount doesn't fail (otherwise they'll stay turned off) b) pray nobody doesn anything funny just as we turn quota off Moreover, LSM provides hooks for doing the same sort of broken logics. The proper way to deal with that is to introduce the second kind of reference to vfsmount. Semantics: - when the last normal reference is dropped, all special ones are converted to normal ones and if there had been any, cleanup is done. - normal reference can be cloned into a special one - special reference can be converted to normal one; that's a no-op if we'd already passed the point of no return (i.e. mntput() had converted special references to normal and started cleanup). The way it works: e.g. starting process accounting converts the vfsmount reference pinned by the opened file into special one and turns it back to normal when it gets shut down; acct_auto_close() is done when no normal references are left. That way it does *not* obstruct umount(2) and it silently gets turned off when the last normal reference to vfsmount is gone. Which is exactly what we want... The same should be done by LSM module that holds some internal references to vfsmount and wants to shut them down on umount - it should make them special and security_sb_umount_close() will be called exactly when the last normal reference to vfsmount is gone. quota handling is even simpler - we don't use normal file IO anymore, so there's no need to hold vfsmounts at all. DQUOT_OFF() is done from deactivate_super(), where it really belongs. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] pivot_root() circular reference fixMiklos Szeredi2005-09-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fix http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4857 When pivot_root is called from an init script in an initramfs environment, it causes a circular reference in the mount tree. The cause of this is that pivot_root() is not prepared to handle pivoting an unattached mount. In an initramfs environment, rootfs is the root of the namespace, and so it is not attached. This patch fixes this and related problems, by returning -EINVAL if either the current root or the new root is detached. * [PATCH] namespace.c: fix bind mount from foreign namespaceMiklos Szeredi2005-08-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I'm resending this patch, because I still believe it's the correct fix. Tested before/after applying the patch with a test application available from: http://www.inf.bme.hu/~mszeredi/nstest.c Bind mount from a foreign namespace results in an un-removable mount. The reason is that mnt->mnt_namespace is copied from the old mount in clone_mnt(). Because of this check_mnt() in sys_umount() will fail. The solution is to set mnt->mnt_namespace to current->namespace in clone_mnt(). clone_mnt() is either called from do_loopback() or copy_tree(). copy_tree() is called from do_loopback() or copy_namespace(). When called (directly or indirectly) from do_loopback(), always current->namspace is being modified: check_mnt(nd->mnt). So setting mnt->mnt_namespace to current->namspace is the right thing to do. When called from copy_namespace(), the setting of mnt_namespace is irrelevant, since mnt_namespace is reset later in that function for all copied mounts. Jamie said: This patch is correct. The old code was buggy for more fundamental and serious reason: it broke the invariant that a tree of vfsmnts all have the same value of mnt_namespace (and the same for the mnt_list list). * [PATCH] set mnt_namespace in the correct placeMiklos Szeredi2005-07-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch sets ->mnt_namespace where it's actually added to the namespace. Previously mnt_namespace was set in do_kern_mount() even if the filesystem was never added to any process's namespace (most kernel-internal filesystems). This discrepancy doesn't actually cause any problems, but it's cleaner if mnt_namespace is NULL for these non exported filesystems.
