* fs: take the ACL checks to common codeChristoph Hellwig2011-07-25
| | | | | | | | | Replace the ->check_acl method with a ->get_acl method that simply reads an ACL from disk after having a cache miss. This means we can replace the ACL checking boilerplate code with a single implementation in namei.c. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* kill boilerplates around posix_acl_create_masq()Al Viro2011-07-25
| | | | | | | | | new helper: posix_acl_create(&acl, gfp, mode_p). Replaces acl with modified clone, on failure releases acl and replaces with NULL. Returns 0 or -ve on error. All callers of posix_acl_create_masq() switched. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* kill boilerplate around posix_acl_chmod_masq()Al Viro2011-07-25
| | | | | | | | | new helper: posix_acl_chmod(&acl, gfp, mode). Replaces acl with modified clone or with NULL if that has failed; returns 0 or -ve on error. All callers of posix_acl_chmod_masq() switched to that - they'd been doing exactly the same thing. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* vfs: move ACL cache lookup into generic codeLinus Torvalds2011-07-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This moves logic for checking the cached ACL values from low-level filesystems into generic code. The end result is a streamlined ACL check that doesn't need to load the inode->i_op->check_acl pointer at all for the common cached case. The filesystems also don't need to check for a non-blocking RCU walk case in their acl_check() functions, because that is all handled at a VFS layer. * fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlersJosef Bacik2011-07-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there. * fs: simplify the blockdev_direct_IO prototypeChristoph Hellwig2011-07-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Simple filesystems always pass inode->i_sb_bdev as the block device argument, and never need a end_io handler. Let's simply things for them and for my grepping activity by dropping these arguments. The only thing not falling into that scheme is ext4, which passes and end_io handler without needing special flags (yet), but given how messy the direct I/O code there is use of __blockdev_direct_IO in one instead of two out of three cases isn't going to make a large difference anyway. * fs: move inode_dio_wait calls into ->setattrChristoph Hellwig2011-07-20
| | | | | | | | | | Let filesystems handle waiting for direct I/O requests themselves instead of doing it beforehand. This means filesystem-specific locks to prevent new dio referenes from appearing can be held. This is important to allow generalizing i_dio_count to non-DIO_LOCKING filesystems. * jfs: agstart field must be 64 bitsDave Kleikamp2011-06-20

* JFS: Don't save agno in the inodeDave Kleikamp2011-06-20
| | | | | | | | | Resizing the file system can result in an in-memory inode being remapped to a different aggregate group (AG). A cached AG number can cause problems when trying to free or allocate inodes. Instead, save the IAG's agstart address and calculate the agno when we need it. Signed-off-by: Dave Kleikamp <dave.kleikamp@oracle.com>
* jfs: Update agstart when resizing volumeDave Kleikamp2011-06-20
| | | | | | | | | | | A comment indicates that the IAG's agstart does not need to be updated since it will always point to a block in the same aggregate group, but jfs_fsck isn't so forgiving and reports it as an error. I'm fixing this in jfsutils as well, so either a new kernel or new utilities will be sufficient to fix the problem. Signed-off-by: Dave Kleikamp <dave.kleikamp@oracle.com>

* fs: pass exact type of data dirties to ->dirty_inodeChristoph Hellwig2011-05-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Tell the filesystem if we just updated timestamp (I_DIRTY_SYNC) or anything else, so that the filesystem can track internally if it needs to push out a transaction for fdatasync or not. This is just the prototype change with no user for it yet. I plan to push large XFS changes for the next merge window, and getting this trivial infrastructure in this window would help a lot to avoid tree interdependencies. Also remove incorrect comments that ->dirty_inode can't block. That has been changed a long time ago, and many implementations rely on it. | | | * fs/vfs/security: pass last path component to LSM on inode creationEric Paris2011-02-01

We currently label new inodes based on the parent and the creating process. This new behavior would also take into account the name of the new object when deciding the new label. This is not the (supposed) full path, just the last component of the path. This is very useful because creating /etc/shadow is different than creating /etc/passwd but the kernel hooks are unable to differentiate these operations. We currently require that userspace realize it is doing some difficult operation like that and than userspace jumps through SELinux hoops to get things set up correctly. This patch does not implement new behavior, that is obviously contained in a seperate SELinux patch, but it does pass the needed name down to the correct LSM hook. If no such name exists it is fine to pass NULL. Signed-off-by: Eric Paris <eparis@redhat.com>

| * | block: clean up blkdev_get() wrappers and their usersTejun Heo2010-11-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get(). Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path(). blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum(). blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode. All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions. * btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put(). * gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in sb->s_mode. * With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain FMODE_EXCL. WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect errors. The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments. While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too. | * | block: make blkdev_get/put() handle exclusive accessTejun Heo2010-11-13

The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that, * blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management. @holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses. * blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are removed automatically. * bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer necessary and either made static or removed. * bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder() is no longer necessary and removed. * open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev() and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only() test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get(). * open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to blkdev_get(). Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put() and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases. open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup - rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop special features. Well, let's leave them for another day. Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the same. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: change d_hash for rcu-walkNick Piggin2011-01-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_hash so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. See similar patch for d_compare for details. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | fs: change d_compare for rcu-walkNick Piggin2011-01-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Change d_compare so it may be called from lock-free RCU lookups. This does put significant restrictions on what may be done from the callback, however there don't seem to have been any problems with in-tree fses. If some strange use case pops up that _really_ cannot cope with the rcu-walk rules, we can just add new rcu-unaware callbacks, which would cause name lookup to drop out of rcu-walk mode. For in-tree filesystems, this is just a mechanical change. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
* | jfs: dont overwrite dentry name in d_revalidateNick Piggin2011-01-07
|/ | | | | | | | Use vfat's method for dealing with negative dentries to preserve case, rather than overwrite dentry name in d_revalidate, which is a bit ugly and also gets in the way of doing lock-free path walking. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>
