* CRED: Use creds in file structsDavid Howells2008-11-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | Attach creds to file structs and discard f_uid/f_gid. file_operations::open() methods (such as hppfs_open()) should use file->f_cred rather than current_cred(). At the moment file->f_cred will be current_cred() at this point. * CRED: Wrap task credential accesses in the Coda filesystemDavid Howells2008-11-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds. Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id(). Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id(). In some places it makes more sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be addressed by later patches. * [PATCH] move executable checking into ->permission()Miklos Szeredi2008-10-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | For execute permission on a regular files we need to check if file has any execute bits at all, regardless of capabilites. This check is normally performed by generic_permission() but was also added to the case when the filesystem defines its own ->permission() method. In the latter case the filesystem should be responsible for performing this check. Move the check from inode_permission() inside filesystems which are not calling generic_permission(). Create a helper function execute_ok() that returns true if the inode is a directory or if any execute bits are present in i_mode. Also fix up the following code: - coda control file is never executable - sysctl files are never executable - hfs_permission seems broken on MAY_EXEC, remove - hfsplus_permission is eqivalent to generic_permission(), remove Signed-off-by: Miklos Szeredi <mszeredi@suse.cz>

* coda: remove CODA_FS_OLD_APIAdrian Bunk2008-07-25
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While fixing CONFIG_ leakages to the userspace kernel headers I ran into CODA_FS_OLD_API. After five years, are there still people using the old API left? Especially considering that you have to choose at compile time which API to support in the kernel (and distributions tend to offer the new API for some time). Jan: "The old API can definitely go. * Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck2008-02-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry,vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. * pid namespaces: round up the APIPavel Emelianov2007-10-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The set of functions process_session, task_session, process_group and task_pgrp is confusing, as the names can be mixed with each other when looking at the code for a long time. The proposals are to * equip the functions that return the integer with _nr suffix to represent that fact, * and to make all functions work with task (not process) by making the common prefix of the same name. For monotony the routines signal_session() and set_signal_session() are replaced with task_session_nr() and set_task_session(), especially since they are only used with the explicit task->signal dereference. * Slab API: remove useless ctor parameter and reorder parametersChristoph Lameter2007-10-17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Slab constructors currently have a flags parameter that is never used. And the order of the arguments is opposite to other slab functions. * coda: remove CODA_STORE/CODA_RELEASE upcallsJan Harkes2007-07-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is an variation on the patch sent by Christoph Hellwig which kills file_count abuse by the Coda kernel module by moving the coda_flush functionality into coda_release. However part of reason we were using the coda_flush callback was to allow Coda to pass errors that occur during writeback from the userspace cache manager back to close(). As Al Viro explained on linux-fsdevel, it is impossible to guarantee that such errors can in fact be returned back to the caller. There are many cases where the last reference to a file is not released by the close system call and it is also impossible to pick some close as a 'last-close' and delay it until all other references have been destroyed. The CODA_STORE/CODA_RELEASE upcall combination is clearly a broken design, and it is better to remove it completely. * mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt2007-07-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references). * Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan2007-05-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). * slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flagChristoph Lameter2007-05-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by SLAB. I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is performed before each freeing of an object. I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually before the free. That also places the check near the code object manipulation of the object. Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree). There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors. This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for unimplemented flags from SLUB. * [PATCH] sysctl: remove insert_at_head from register_sysctlEric W. Biederman2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The semantic effect of insert_at_head is that it would allow new registered sysctl entries to override existing sysctl entries of the same name. Which is pain for caching and the proc interface never implemented. I have done an audit and discovered that none of the current users of register_sysctl care as (excpet for directories) they do not register duplicate sysctl entries. So this patch simply removes the support for overriding existing entries in the sys_sysctl interface since no one uses it or cares and it makes future enhancments harder. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] sysctl: C99 convert coda ctl_tables and remove binary sysctlsEric W. Biederman2007-02-14
| | | | | | | | | | | Will converting the coda sysctl initializers I discovered that it is yet another user of sysctl that was stomping CTL_KERN. So off with it's sys_sysctl support since it wasn't done in a supportable way. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [PATCH] mark struct inode_operations const 1Arjan van de Ven2007-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to these shared resources.
