This can happen if the module containing the algorithm requiring fallback is loaded first, without the fallback module being loaded first. The system will then try to test the new algorithm, find that it needs to load a fallback, and then try to load that. As both algorithms share the same module alias, it can attempt to load the original algorithm again and block indefinitely. As algorithms requiring fallbacks are a special case, we can fix this by giving them a different module alias than the rest. Analysis of the resume sequence as applied in Linux was compared to that of other operating systems. Applying this same modification fixes these newer Synaptics touchpads and brings the driver into line with common OS reset behaviour. An alternative to this patch is using platform_driver_probe instead of platform_driver_register plus removing the pointer to the probe function from the struct platform_driver. The caller is responsible for that. This missing synchronization led to the same id being assigned to multiple devices leading to oops. Reported and tracked down by Stuart Hayes of Dell.
