* d_path: Make get_dcookie() use a struct path argumentJan Blunck2008-02-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | get_dcookie() is always called with a dentry and a vfsmount from a struct path. Make get_dcookie() take it directly as an argument. * oProfile: oops when profile_pc() returns ~0LUPhilippe Elie2007-11-14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Instruction pointer returned by profile_pc() can be a random value. This break the assumption than we can safely set struct op_sample.eip field to a magic value to signal to the per-cpu buffer reader side special event like task switch ending up in a segfault in get_task_mm() when profile_pc() return ~0UL. Fixed by sanitizing the sampled eip and reject/log invalid eip. Problem reported by Sami Farin, patch tested by him. * [CELL] oprofile: add support to OProfile for profiling CELL BE SPUsBob Nelson2007-07-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | From: Maynard Johnson <mpjohn@us.ibm.com> This patch updates the existing arch/powerpc/oprofile/op_model_cell.c to add in the SPU profiling capabilities. In addition, a 'cell' subdirectory was added to arch/powerpc/oprofile to hold Cell-specific SPU profiling code. Exports spu_set_profile_private_kref and spu_get_profile_private_kref which are used by OProfile to store private profile information in spufs data structures. Also incorporated several fixes from other patches (rrn). Check pointer returned from kzalloc. Eliminated unnecessary cast. Better error handling and cleanup in the related area. 64-bit unsigned long parameter was being demoted to 32-bit unsigned int and eventually promoted back to unsigned long. * Detach sched.h from mm.hAlexey Dobriyan2007-05-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock() mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why. This patch a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly. e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were getting them indirectly Net result is: a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if they don't need sched.h b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files: on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files, after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%). Cross-compile tested on all arm defconfigs, all mips defconfigs, all powerpc defconfigs, alpha alpha-up arm i386 i386-up i386-defconfig i386-allnoconfig ia64 ia64-up m68k mips parisc parisc-up powerpc powerpc-up s390 s390-up sparc sparc-up sparc64 sparc64-up um-x86_64 x86_64 x86_64-up x86_64-defconfig x86_64-allnoconfig as well as my two usual configs. * [PATCH] mark struct file_operations const 5Arjan van de Ven2007-02-12
| | | | | | | | | | | Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential dirty data. * [PATCH] inode-diet: Eliminate i_blksize from the inode structureTheodore Ts'o2006-09-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This eliminates the i_blksize field from struct inode. Filesystems that want to provide a per-inode st_blksize can do so by providing their own getattr routine instead of using the generic_fillattr() function. Note that some filesystems were providing pretty much random (and incorrect) values for i_blksize. * [PATCH] inode_diet: Replace inode.u.generic_ip with inode.i_privateTheodore Ts'o2006-09-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The following patches reduce the size of the VFS inode structure by 28 bytes on a UP x86. (It would be more on an x86_64 system). This is a 10% reduction in the inode size on a UP kernel that is configured in a production mode (i.e., with no spinlock or other debugging functions enabled; if you want to save memory taken up by in-core inodes, the first thing you should do is disable the debugging options; they are responsible for a huge amount of bloat in the VFS inode structure). This patch: The filesystem or device-specific pointer in the inode is inside a union, which is pretty pointless given that all 30+ users of this field have been using the void pointer. Get rid of the union and rename it to i_private, with a comment to explain who is allowed to use the void pointer. This is just a cleanup, but it allows us to reuse the union 'u' for something something where the union will actually be used. * [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mountDavid Howells2006-06-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint. The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt() which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour). The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the superblock pointer. This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root and mnt_sb would be set directly. The patch also makes the following changes: (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change very little. (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb(). (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon(). This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root, and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in dentries being left unculled. However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries with child trees. [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree. (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation. * [PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversionsAndrew Morton2006-03-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. * [PATCH] Make RCU task_struct safe for oprofilePaul E. McKenney2006-01-08
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Applying RCU to the task structure broke oprofile, because free_task_notify() can now be called from softirq. This means that the task_mortuary lock must be acquired with irq disabled in order to avoid intermittent self-deadlock. Since irq is now disabled, the critical section within process_task_mortuary() has been restructured to be O(1) in order to maximize scalability and minimize realtime latency degradation. * [PATCH] clean up inline static vs static inlineJesper Juhl2005-07-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | `gcc -W' likes to complain if the static keyword is not at the beginning of the declaration. * [PATCH] oprofile: report anonymous region samplesJohn Levon2005-06-24

* [PATCH] smp_processor_id() cleanupIngo Molnar2005-06-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a number of smp_processor_id() cleanup ideas that Arjan van de Ven and I came up with. The previous __smp_processor_id/_smp_processor_id/smp_processor_id API spaghetti was hard to follow both on the implementational and on the usage side. Some of the complexity arose from picking wrong names, some of the complexity comes from the fact that not all architectures defined __smp_processor_id. In the new code, there are two externally visible symbols: - smp_processor_id(): debug variant. - raw_smp_processor_id(): nondebug variant. Replaces all existing uses of _smp_processor_id() and __smp_processor_id(). Defined by every SMP architecture in include/asm-*/smp.h. There is one new internal symbol, dependent on DEBUG_PREEMPT: - debug_smp_processor_id(): internal debug variant, mapped to smp_processor_id(). Also, i moved debug_smp_processor_id() from lib/kernel_lock.c into a new lib/smp_processor_id.c file. All related comments got updated and/or clarified. I have build/boot tested the following 8 .config combinations on x86: {SMP,UP} x {PREEMPT,!PREEMPT} x {DEBUG_PREEMPT,!DEBUG_PREEMPT} I have also build/boot tested x64 on UP/PREEMPT/DEBUG_PREEMPT. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
