* Driver core: change sysdev classes to use dynamic kobject namesKay Sievers2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | | All kobjects require a dynamically allocated name now. We no longer need to keep track if the name is statically assigned, we can just unconditionally free() all kobject names on cleanup. * Driver core: convert block from raw kobjects to core devicesKay Sievers2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This moves the block devices to /sys/class/block. It will create a flat list of all block devices, with the disks and partitions in one directory. For compatibility /sys/block is created and contains symlinks to the disks. /sys/class/block |-- sda -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda |-- sda1 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda1 |-- sda10 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda10 |-- sda5 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda5 |-- sda6 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda6 |-- sda7 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda7 |-- sda8 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda8 |-- sda9 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda9 `-- sr0 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sr0 /sys/block/ |-- sda -> ../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda `-- sr0 -> ../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.2/host1/target1:0:0/1:0:0:0/block/sr0 Signed-off-by: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Kobject: convert drivers/base/class.c to use kobject_init/add_ng()Greg Kroah-Hartman2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | This converts the code to use the new kobject functions, cleaning up the logic in doing so. Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* kobject: remove subsystem_(un)register functionsGreg Kroah-Hartman2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | These functions are no longer used and are the last remants of the old subsystem crap. So delete them for good. Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* kset: remove decl_subsys macroGreg Kroah-Hartman2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | This macro is no longer used. ksets should be created dynamically with a call to kset_create_and_add() not declared statically. Yes, there are 5 remaining static struct kset usages in the kernel tree, but they will be fixed up soon. Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* kset: convert drivers/base/class.c to use kset_createGreg Kroah-Hartman2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | Dynamically create the kset instead of declaring it statically. The class_obj subsystem is not yet converted as it is more complex and should be going away soon with the removal of class_device from the kernel tree. Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* kobject: remove struct kobj_type from struct ksetGreg Kroah-Hartman2008-01-24
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We don't need a "default" ktype for a kset. We should set this explicitly every time for each kset. This change is needed so that we can make ksets dynamic, and cleans up one of the odd, undocumented assumption that the kset/kobject/ktype model has. This patch is based on a lot of help from Kay Sievers. Nasty bug in the block code was found by Dave Young <hidave.darkstar@gmail.com> Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Cc: Dave Young <hidave.darkstar@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Revert "Driver core: remove class_device_*_bin_file"Greg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-31
| | | | | | | | | | | This reverts commit fcd239d3d5575e5cc63aab5c33cf6dc66904f6d6. I messed up, ia64 still uses these files in the current tree, and now can not build the pci code, which all ia64 boxes seem to require :) This fixes that mistake. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: remove class_device_*_bin_fileGreg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-31
| | | | | | | | | | | | These functions are not used by anyone, so remove them from the tree. The class_device code will be removed soon anyway, so no future users will ever be possible. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: rename ktype_classGreg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-12
| | | | | | | | | | | This makes it a bit more sane when trying to figure out how to clean up the ktype mess. Based on a larger patch from Kay Sievers Cc: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* driver core: remove subsystem_init()Greg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-12
| | | | | | | There is only one user of it, and it is only a wrapper for kset_init(). Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: remove subsys_get()Greg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-12
| | | | | | | | There are no more subsystems, it's a kset now so remove the function and the only two users, which are in the driver core. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: remove subsys_put()Greg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-12
| | | | | | | | There are no more subsystems, it's a kset now so remove the function and the only two users, which are in the driver core. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: remove subsys_set_ksetGreg Kroah-Hartman2007-10-12
| | | | | | | | | This macro is only used by the driver core and is held over from when we had subsystems. It is not needed anymore. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: change add_uevent_var to use a structKay Sievers2007-10-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This changes the uevent buffer functions to use a struct instead of a long list of parameters. It does no longer require the caller to do the proper buffer termination and size accounting, which is currently wrong in some places. It fixes a known bug where parts of the uevent environment are overwritten because of wrong index calculations. Many thanks to Mathieu Desnoyers for finding bugs and improving the error handling. Signed-off-by: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Cc: Mathieu Desnoyers <mathieu.desnoyers@polymtl.ca> Cc: Cornelia Huck <cornelia.huck@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* driver-core: make devt_attr and uevent_attr staticTejun Heo2007-07-11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | devt_attr and uevent_attr are either allocated dynamically with or embedded in device and class_device as they needed their owner field set to the module implementing the driver. Now that sysfs implements immediate disconnect and owner field removed from struct attribute, there is no reason to do this. Remove these attributes from [class_]device and use static attribute structures instead. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* sysfs: kill unnecessary attribute->ownerTejun Heo2007-07-11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper, so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to accessing removed modules. This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the backing module from being unloaded. For more info regarding lifetime rule cleanup, please read the following message. http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/510293 (tweaked by Greg to not delete the field just yet, to make it easier to merge things properly.) * Driver core: keep PHYSDEV for old struct class_deviceKay Sievers2007-06-08
| | | | | | | | | | Class-devices created by "struct class_device" are going to be replaced by "struct device". Keep the deprecated PHYSDEV* variables for the already "deprecated" struct class_device" devices. Signed-off-by: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* remove "struct subsystem" as it is no longer neededGreg Kroah-Hartman2007-05-02
| | | | | | | | | | | We need to work on cleaning up the relationship between kobjects, ksets and ktypes. The removal of 'struct subsystem' is the first step of this, especially as it is not really needed at all. Thanks to Kay for fixing the bugs in this patch. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* driver core: fix namespace issue with devices assigned to classesKay Sievers2007-04-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | - uses a kset in "struct class" to keep track of all directories belonging to this class - merges with the /sys/devices/virtual logic. - removes the namespace-dir if the last member of that class leaves the directory. There may be locking or refcounting fixes left, I stopped when it seemed to work with network and sound modules. :) From: Kay Sievers <kay.sievers@vrfy.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* Driver core: remove class_device_renameGreg Kroah-Hartman2007-02-23
| | | | | | | | | No one uses it, and it wasn't exported to modules, so remove it. The only other user of it was the network code, which is now converted to use struct device instead. Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>

* [PATCH] Driver core: add generic "subsystem" link to all devicesKay Sievers2006-06-21
| | | | | | | | | | | Like the SUBSYTEM= key we find in the environment of the uevent, this creates a generic "subsystem" link in sysfs for every device. Userspace usually doesn't care at all if its a "class" or a "bus" device. This provides an unified way to determine the subsytem of a device, regardless of the way the driver core has created it. * [PATCH] Driver core: allow struct device to have a dev_tGreg Kroah-Hartman2006-06-21
| | | | | | | | | | This is the first step in moving class_device to being replaced by struct device. It allows struct device to export a dev_t and makes it easy to dynamically create and destroy struct device as long as they are associated with a specific class. * [PATCH] Driver core: class_device_add needs error checksStephen Hemminger2006-06-21
| | | | | | | | | class_device_add needs to check the return value of all the setup it does. It doesn't handle out of memory well. This is not complete, probably more needs to be done. Signed-off-by: Stephen Hemminger <shemminger@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* [CLASS DEVICE]: add attribute_group creationStephen Hemminger2006-05-06
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Extend the support of attribute groups in class_device's to allow groups to be created as part of the registration process. This allows network device's to avoid race between registration and creating groups. Note that unlike attributes that are a property of the class object, the groups are a property of the class_device object. This is done because there are different types of network devices (wireless for example). * [PATCH] driver core: replace "hotplug" by "uevent"Kay Sievers2006-01-04
| | | | | | | | | Leave the overloaded "hotplug" word to susbsystems which are handling real devices. The driver core does not "plug" anything, it just exports the state to userspace and generates events.
