* [PATCH] sh64: remove the use of kernel syscallsArnd Bergmann2006-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | sh64 is using system call macros to call some functions from the kernel. The old debug code can simply be removed, since we don't really have that much of a need for it anymore, it was mostly something that was handy during the initial bringup. This also brings us closer to something that looks like readable code again.. I also added a sane kernel_thread() implementation that gets away from this, so that should take care of sh64 at least. * [PATCH] provide kernel_execve on all architecturesArnd Bergmann2006-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This adds the new kernel_execve function on all architectures that were using _syscall3() to implement execve. The implementation uses code from the _syscall3 macros provided in the unistd.h header file. I don't have cross-compilers for any of these architectures, so the patch is untested with the exception of i386. Most architectures can probably implement this in a nicer way in assembly or by combining it with the sys_execve implementation itself, but this should do it for now. * [PATCH] namespaces: add nsproxySerge E. Hallyn2006-10-02
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch adds a nsproxy structure to the task struct. Later patches will move the fs namespace pointer into this structure, and introduce a new utsname namespace into the nsproxy. The vserver and openvz functionality, then, would be implemented in large part by virtualizing/isolating more and more resources into namespaces, each contained in the nsproxy. * [PATCH] kill wall_jiffiesAtsushi Nemoto2006-10-01
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With 2.6.18-rc4-mm2, now wall_jiffies will always be the same as jiffies. So we can kill wall_jiffies completely. This is just a cleanup and logically should not change any real behavior except for one thing: RTC updating code in (old) ppc and xtensa use a condition "jiffies - wall_jiffies == 1". This condition is never met so I suppose it is just a bug. I just remove that condition only instead of kill the whole "if" block. * [PATCH] simplify update_times (avoid jiffies/jiffies_64 aliasing problem)Atsushi Nemoto2006-09-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Pass ticks to do_timer() and update_times(), and adjust x86_64 and s390 timer interrupt handler with this change. Currently update_times() calculates ticks by "jiffies - wall_jiffies", but callers of do_timer() should know how many ticks to update. Passing ticks get rid of this redundant calculation. Also there are another redundancy pointed out by Martin Schwidefsky. This cleanup make a barrier added by 5aee405c662ca644980c184774277fc6d0769a84 needless. So this patch removes it. As a bonus, this cleanup make wall_jiffies can be removed easily, since now wall_jiffies is always synced with jiffies. (This patch does not really remove wall_jiffies. It would be another cleanup patch) Signed-off-by: Atsushi Nemoto <anemo@mba.ocn.ne.jp> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: "Eric W. * [PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu2006-09-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * sh64: Drop deprecated ISA tuning for legacy toolchains.Paul Mundt2006-09-12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The original sh64 toolchains required that we tune the ISA level accordingly to not have head.S/entry.S blow up. With current toolchains, this is no longer the case, and the syntax magically changed as well, causing all current toolchains to die a horrible death. Incidentally, code generation in other parts of the kernel is now significantly complex enough that none of the older toolchains make it very far these days, so there's not even any point in preserving legacy compatability via as-option. This fixes a long-standing issue, as noted here: http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/1/5/223 Though at the time the current toolchains were too broken to make adjusting the tuning worthwhile. * [PATCH] tty: Remove include of screen_info.h from tty.hJon Smirl2006-07-10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | screen_info.h doesn't have anything to do with the tty layer and shouldn't be included by tty.h. This patches removes the include and modifies all users to directly include screen_info.h. struct screen_info is mainly used to communicate with the console drivers in drivers/video/console. Note that this patch touches every arch and I have no way of testing it. If there is a mistake the worst thing that will happen is a compile error. * | [PATCH] genirq: rename desc->handler to desc->chipIngo Molnar2006-06-29
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch-queue improves the generic IRQ layer to be truly generic, by adding various abstractions and features to it, without impacting existing functionality. While the queue can be best described as "fix and improve everything in the generic IRQ layer that we could think of", and thus it consists of many smaller features and lots of cleanups, the one feature that stands out most is the new 'irq chip' abstraction. The irq-chip abstraction is about describing and coding and IRQ controller driver by mapping its raw hardware capabilities [and quirks, if needed] in a straightforward way, without having to think about "IRQ flow" (level/edge/etc.) type of details. This stands in contrast with the current 'irq-type' model of genirq architectures, which 'mixes' raw hardware capabilities with 'flow' details. The patchset supports both types of irq controller designs at once, and converts i386 and x86_64 to the new irq-chip design. As a bonus side-effect of the irq-chip approach, chained interrupt controllers (master/slave PIC constructs, etc.) are now supported by design as well. The end result of this patchset intends to be simpler architecture-level code and more consolidation between architectures. We reused many bits of code and many concepts from Russell King's ARM IRQ layer, the merging of which was one of the motivations for this patchset. This patch: rename desc->handler to desc->chip. Originally i did not want to do this, because it's a big patch. But having both "desc->handler", "desc->handle_irq" and "action->handler" caused a large degree of confusion and made the code appear alot less clean than it truly is. I have also attempted a dual approach as well by introducing a desc->chip alias - but that just wasnt robust enough and broke frequently. So lets get over with this quickly. The conversion was done automatically via scripts and converts all the code in the kernel. This renaming patch is the first one amongst the patches, so that the remaining patches can stay flexible and can be merged and split up without having some big monolithic patch act as a merge barrier. * | [PATCH] node hotplug: register cpu: remove node structKAMEZAWA Hiroyuki2006-06-27
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With Goto-san's patch, we can add new pgdat/node at runtime. I'm now considering node-hot-add with cpu + memory on ACPI. I found acpi container, which describes node, could evaluate cpu before memory. This means cpu-hot-add occurs before memory hot add. In most part, cpu-hot-add doesn't depend on node hot add. But register_cpu(), which creates symbolic link from node to cpu, requires that node should be onlined before register_cpu(). When a node is onlined, its pgdat should be there. This patch-set holds off creating symbolic link from node to cpu until node is onlined. This removes node arguments from register_cpu(). Now, register_cpu() requires 'struct node' as its argument. But the array of struct node is now unified in driver/base/node.c now (By Goto's node hotplug patch). We can get struct node in generic way. So, this argument is not necessary now. This patch also guarantees add cpu under node only when node is onlined. It is necessary for node-hot-add vs. cpu-hot-add patch following this. Moreover, register_cpu calculates cpu->node_id by cpu_to_node() without regard to its 'struct node *root' argument. This patch removes it. Also modify callers of register_cpu()/unregister_cpu, whose args are changed by register-cpu-remove-node-struct patch. * [PATCH] fix incorrect SA_ONSTACK behaviour for 64-bit processesLaurent MEYER2006-06-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | - When setting a sighandler using sigaction() call, if the flag SA_ONSTACK is set and no alternate stack is provided via sigaltstack(), the kernel still try to install the alternate stack. This behavior is the opposite of the one which is documented in Single Unix Specifications V3. - Also when setting an alternate stack using sigaltstack() with the flag SS_DISABLE, the kernel try to install the alternate stack on signal delivery. These two use cases makes the process crash at signal delivery. * [PATCH] No arch-specific strpbrk implementationsKyle McMartin2006-04-11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | While cleaning up parisc_ksyms.c earlier, I noticed that strpbrk wasn't being exported from lib/string.c. Investigating further, I noticed a changeset that removed its export and added it to _ksyms.c on a few more architectures. The justification was that "other arches do it." I think this is wrong, since no architecture currently defines __HAVE_ARCH_STRPBRK, there's no reason for any of them to be exporting it themselves. Therefore, consolidate the export to lib/string.c. * [PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen2006-03-27
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. * [PATCH] more for_each_cpu() conversionsAndrew Morton2006-03-23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When we stop allocating percpu memory for not-possible CPUs we must not touch the percpu data for not-possible CPUs at all. The correct way of doing this is to test cpu_possible() or to use for_each_cpu(). This patch is a kernel-wide sweep of all instances of NR_CPUS. I found very few instances of this bug, if any. But the patch converts lots of open-coded test to use the preferred helper macros. * [PATCH] hugepage: is_aligned_hugepage_range() cleanupDavid Gibson2006-03-22
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Quite a long time back, prepare_hugepage_range() replaced is_aligned_hugepage_range() as the callback from mm/mmap.c to arch code to verify if an address range is suitable for a hugepage mapping. is_aligned_hugepage_range() stuck around, but only to implement prepare_hugepage_range() on archs which didn't implement their own. Most archs (everything except ia64 and powerpc) used the same implementation of is_aligned_hugepage_range(). On powerpc, which implements its own prepare_hugepage_range(), the custom version was never used. In addition, "is_aligned_hugepage_range()" was a bad name, because it suggests it returns true iff the given range is a good hugepage range, whereas in fact it returns 0-or-error (so the sense is reversed). This patch cleans up by abolishing is_aligned_hugepage_range(). Instead prepare_hugepage_range() is defined directly. Most archs use the default version, which simply checks the given region is aligned to the size of a hugepage. ia64 and powerpc define custom versions. The ia64 one simply checks that the range is in the correct address space region in addition to being suitably aligned. The powerpc version (just as previously) checks for suitable addresses, and if necessary performs low-level MMU frobbing to set up new areas for use by hugepages. No libhugetlbfs testsuite regressions on ppc64 (POWER5 LPAR). Signed-off-by: David Gibson <david@gibson.dropbear.id.au> Signed-off-by: Zhang Yanmin <yanmin.zhang@intel.com> Cc: "David S. * [PATCH] sched: resched and cpu_idle reworkNick Piggin2005-11-09
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make some changes to the NEED_RESCHED and POLLING_NRFLAG to reduce confusion, and make their semantics rigid. Improves efficiency of resched_task and some cpu_idle routines. * In resched_task: - TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the task's runqueue lock held, and as we hold it during resched_task, then there is no need for an atomic test and set there. The only other time this should be set is when the task's quantum expires, in the timer interrupt - this is protected against because the rq lock is irq-safe. - If TIF_NEED_RESCHED is set, then we don't need to do anything. It won't get unset until the task get's schedule()d off. - If we are running on the same CPU as the task we resched, then set TIF_NEED_RESCHED and no further action is required. - If we are running on another CPU, and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG is *not* set after TIF_NEED_RESCHED has been set, then we need to send an IPI. Using these rules, we are able to remove the test and set operation in resched_task, and make clear the previously vague semantics of POLLING_NRFLAG. * In idle routines: - Enter cpu_idle with preempt disabled. When the need_resched() condition becomes true, explicitly call schedule(). This makes things a bit clearer (IMO), but haven't updated all architectures yet. - Many do a test and clear of TIF_NEED_RESCHED for some reason. According to the resched_task rules, this isn't needed (and actually breaks the assumption that TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the runqueue lock held). So remove that. Generally one less locked memory op when switching to the idle thread. - Many idle routines clear TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG, and only set it in the inner most polling idle loops. The above resched_task semantics allow it to be set until before the last time need_resched() is checked before going into a halt requiring interrupt wakeup. Many idle routines simply never enter such a halt, and so POLLING_NRFLAG can be always left set, completely eliminating resched IPIs when rescheduling the idle task. POLLING_NRFLAG width can be increased, to reduce the chance of resched IPIs. * [PATCH] sched: disable preempt in idle tasksNick Piggin2005-11-09
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Run idle threads with preempt disabled. Also corrected a bugs in arm26's cpu_idle (make it actually call schedule()). How did it ever work before? Might fix the CPU hotplugging hang which Nigel Cunningham noted. We think the bug hits if the idle thread is preempted after checking need_resched() and before going to sleep, then the CPU offlined. After calling stop_machine_run, the CPU eventually returns from preemption and into the idle thread and goes to sleep. The CPU will continue executing previous idle and have no chance to call play_dead. By disabling preemption until we are ready to explicitly schedule, this bug is fixed and the idle threads generally become more robust. * [PATCH] consolidate sys_ptrace()Christoph Hellwig2005-11-07
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The sys_ptrace boilerplate code (everything outside the big switch statement for the arch-specific requests) is shared by most architectures. This patch moves it to kernel/ptrace.c and leaves the arch-specific code as arch_ptrace. Some architectures have a too different ptrace so we have to exclude them. They continue to keep their implementations. For sh64 I had to add a sh64_ptrace wrapper because it does some initialization on the first call. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Use pte_offset_map_lock, instead of pte_offset_map (or inappropriate pte_offset_kernel) and mm-wide page_table_lock, in sundry arch places. The sh __do_page_fault: which handles both kernel faults (without lock) and user mm faults (locked - though it set_pte without locking before). The sh64 flush_cache_range and helpers: which wrongly thought callers held page_table_lock before (only its tlb_start_vma did, and no longer does so); moved the flush loop down, and adjusted the large versus small range decision to consider a range which spans page tables as large. * [PATCH] mm: init_mm without ptlockHugh Dickins2005-10-30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | First step in pushing down the page_table_lock. init_mm.page_table_lock has been used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize kernel address space allocation (that's usually vmlist_lock), but because pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it. Reverse that: don't lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the architectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take and drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already did. Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc's map_vm_area. Some temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle user mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock differently according to whether or not it's init_mm. If sources get muddled, there's a danger that an arch source taking init_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or neither take it). So break the rules and make another change, which should break the build for such a mismatch: remove the redundant mm arg from pte_alloc_kernel (ppc64 scrapped its distinct ioremap_mm in 2.6.13). Exceptions: arm26 used pte_alloc_kernel on user mm, now pte_alloc_map; ia64 used pte_alloc_map on init_mm, now pte_alloc_kernel; parisc had bad args to pmd_alloc and pte_alloc_kernel in unused USE_HPPA_IOREMAP code; ppc64 map_io_page forgot to unlock on failure; ppc mmu_mapin_ram and ppc64 im_free took page_table_lock for no good reason. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When introducing the generic asm-offsets.h support the dependency chain for the prepare targets was changed. All build scripts expecting include/asm/asm-offsets.h to be made when using the prepare target would broke. With the limited number of prepare targets left in arch Makefiles the trivial solution was to introduce a new arch specific target: archprepare The dependency chain looks like this now: prepare | +--> prepare0 | +--> archprepare | +--> scripts_basic +--> prepare1 | +---> prepare2 | +--> prepare3 So prepare 3 is processed before prepare2 etc. This guaantees that the asm symlink, version.h, scripts_basic are all updated before archprepare is processed. prepare0 which build the asm-offsets.h file will need the actions performed by archprepare. The head target is now named prepare, because users scripts will most likely use that target, but prepare-all has been kept for compatibility. Updated Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.txt.
