The SPIC irq is not really shareable, the IO port cannot be cleared and
always returns some data so there is no real way to understand if the irq
is for us or not. Moreover the _PRS acpi method says the irq is not
shareable.
In addition to this, in some cases, an additional write to the IO port has
to be performed in order to properly decode the event received from the
device. This generates another interrupt which may overlap with the
previous one. In the future this is going to be important for properly
decoding events.

Having separate drivers for SPIC showed to be useless, only type3 has a
slightly different behaviour than the others and there seem to be no real
conflict between them.

The following commit made console open fails while booting:
commit b50989dc444599c8b21edc23536fc305f4e9b7d5
Author: Alan Cox <alan@linux.intel.com>
Date: Sat Sep 19 13:13:22 2009 -0700
tty: make the kref destructor occur asynchronously
Due to tty release routines run in a workqueue now, error like the
following will be reported while booting:
INIT open /dev/console Input/output error
It also causes hibernation regression to appear as reported at
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14229
The reason is that now there's latency issue with closing, but when
we open a "closing not finished" tty, -EIO will be returned.
Fix it as per the following Alan's suggestion:
Fun but it's actually not a bug and the fix is wrong in itself as
the port may be closing but not yet being destructed, in which case
it seems to do the wrong thing. Opening a tty that is closing (and
could be closing for long periods) is supposed to return -EIO.
I suspect a better way to deal with this and keep the old console
timing is to split tty->shutdown into two functions.
tty->shutdown() - called synchronously just before we dump the tty
onto the waitqueue for destruction
tty->cleanup() - called when the destructor runs.
We would then do the shutdown part which can occur in IRQ context
fine, before queueing the rest of the release (from tty->magic = 0
... the end) to occur asynchronously
The USB update in -next would then need a call like
if (tty->cleanup)
tty->cleanup(tty);
at the top of the async function and the USB shutdown to be split
between shutdown and cleanup as the USB resource cleanup and final
tidy cannot occur synchronously as it needs to sleep.
In other words the logic becomes
final kref put
make object unfindable
async
clean it up

Commit 3d5b6fb47a8e68fa311ca2c3447e7f8a7c3a9cf3 ("ACPI: Kill overly
verbose "power state" log messages") removed the actual use of this
variable, but didn't remove the variable itself, resulting in build
warnings like
drivers/acpi/processor_idle.c: In function ‘acpi_processor_power_init’:
drivers/acpi/processor_idle.c:1169: warning: unused variable ‘i’

On NOHZ systems the following timers,
- tick_nohz_restart_sched_tick (tick_sched_timer)
- hrtimer_start (tick_sched_timer)
are reprogramming the clock events device far more often than needed.
No specific test case was required to observe this effect. This
occurres because there was no check to see if the currently removed or
restarted hrtimer was:
1) the one which previously armed the clock events device.
2) going to be replaced by another timer which has the same expiry time.
Avoid the reprogramming in hrtimer_force_reprogram when the new expiry
value which is evaluated from the clock bases is equal to
cpu_base->expires_next. This results in faster application startup
time by ~4%.

I was recently lucky enough to get a 64-CPU system, so my kernel log
ends up with 64 lines like:
ACPI: CPU0 (power states: C1[C1] C2[C3])
This is pretty useless clutter because this info is already available
after boot from both /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpuidle/state?/ as
well as /proc/acpi/processor/CPU*/power.
So just delete the code that prints the C-states in processor_idle.c.

The message "ACPI: Device needs an ACPI driver" is misleading. The
device _may_ need an ACPI driver, if the BIOS implemented a custom
API for the device in question (which, AFAIK, can't be checked.) If
not, then either a generic ACPI driver may be used (for example
"thermal"), or nothing can be done (other than a white list).
I propose to reword the message to:
ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use
it instead of the native driver
which I think is more correct. Comments and suggestions welcome.
I also added a message warning about possible problems and system
instability when users pass acpi_enforce_resources=lax, as suggested
by Len.

[IA64] implement ticket locks for Itanium

Back in January 2008 Nick Piggin implemented "ticket" spinlocks
for X86 (See commit 314cdbefd1fd0a7acf3780e9628465b77ea6a836).
IA64 implementation has a couple of differences because of the
available atomic operations ... e.g. we have no fetchadd2 instruction
that operates on a 16-bit quantity so we make ticket locks use
a 32-bit word for each of the current ticket and now-serving values.
Performance on uncontended locks is about 8% worse than the previous
implementation, but this seems a good trade for determinism in the
contended case. Performance impact on macro-level benchmarks is in
the noise.

A pointer to clevo_mail_led_probe is passed to the core via
platform_driver_register and so the function must not disappear when the
.init sections are discarded. Otherwise (if also having HOTPLUG=y)
unbinding and binding a device to the driver via sysfs will result in an
oops as does a device being registered late.

The WM831x devices feature two software controlled status LEDs with
hardware assisted blinking.
The device can also autonomously control the LEDs based on a selection
of sources. This can be configured at boot time using either platform
data or the chip OTP. A sysfs file in the style of that for triggers
allowing the control source to be configured at run time. Triggers
can't be used here since they can't depend on the implementation details

unbinding and binding a device to the driver via sysfs will result in an
oops as does a device being registered late.

The WM831x series of PMICs provide DC-DC boost convertors and current
sinks which can be used together to drive LEDs for use as backlights.
Expose this functionality via the backlight API.
Since when used in this configuration the current sink and boost
convertor are very tightly coupled with a multi-stage startup for
the current sink which overlaps with the boost convertor startup
this driver bypasses the regulator API. Machine inititialisation
is responsible for ensuring that the regulators are not accessed
via both APIs.

PI futexes do not use the same plist_node_empty() test for wakeup.
It was possible for the waiter (in futex_wait_requeue_pi()) to set
TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE after the waker assigned the rtmutex to the
waiter. The waiter would then note the plist was not empty and call
schedule(). The task would not be found by any subsequeuent futex
wakeups, resulting in a userspace hang.
By moving the setting of TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE to before the call to
queue_me(), the race with the waker is eliminated. Since we no
longer call get_user() from within queue_me(), there is no need to
delay the setting of TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE until after the call to
queue_me().
The FUTEX_LOCK_PI operation is not affected as futex_lock_pi()
relies entirely on the rtmutex code to handle schedule() and
wakeup. The requeue PI code is affected because the waiter starts
as a non-PI waiter and is woken on a PI futex.
Remove the crusty old comment about holding spinlocks() across
get_user() as we no longer do that. Correct the locking statement
with a description of why the test is performed.

Use kernel-doc format to describe struct futex_q.
Correct the wakeup definition to eliminate the statement about
waking the waiter between the plist_del() and the q->lock_ptr = 0.
Note in the comment that PI futexes have a different definition of
the woken state.
