* Fix races around the access to ->s_optionsAl Viro2009-05-09
| | | | | | | | | Put generic_show_options read access to s_options under rcu_read_lock, split save_mount_options() into "we are setting it the first time" (uses in foo_fill_super()) and "we are relacing and freeing the old one", synchronize_rcu() before kfree() in the latter. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | If CONFIG_AFS_FSCACHE is not defined, the following warning is displayed when fs/afs/file.c is compiled: fs/afs/file.c:111: warning: ‘afs_file_readpage_read_complete’ defined but not used This occurs because all calls to this function are guarded by CONFIG_AFS_FSCACHE. * FS-Cache: Make kAFS use FS-CacheDavid Howells2009-04-03

* proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::ownerAlexey Dobriyan2009-03-30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL ->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting in module refcount underflow. We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops and ->data. But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment) and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give some thoughts. ->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for protection. rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm. And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular. We definitely don't want such modular code. Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller. So, let's nuke it. Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12454 Signed-off-by: Alexey Dobriyan <adobriyan@gmail.com>

* fs: symlink write_begin allocation context fixNick Piggin2009-01-04
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | With the write_begin/write_end aops, page_symlink was broken because it could no longer pass a GFP_NOFS type mask into the point where the allocations happened. They are done in write_begin, which would always assume that the filesystem can be entered from reclaim. This bug could cause filesystem deadlocks. The funny thing with having a gfp_t mask there is that it doesn't really allow the caller to arbitrarily tinker with the context in which it can be called. It couldn't ever be GFP_ATOMIC, for example, because it needs to take the page lock. The only thing any callers care about is __GFP_FS anyway, so turn that into a single flag. Add a new flag for write_begin, AOP_FLAG_NOFS. Filesystems can now act on this flag in their write_begin function. Change __grab_cache_page to accept a nofs argument as well, to honour that flag (while we're there, change the name to grab_cache_page_write_begin which is more instructive and does away with random leading underscores). This is really a more flexible way to go in the end anyway -- if a filesystem happens to want any extra allocations aside from the pagecache ones in ints write_begin function, it may now use GFP_KERNEL (rather than GFP_NOFS) for common case allocations (eg. ocfs2_alloc_write_ctxt, for a random example). * vfs: Use const for kernel parser tableSteven Whitehouse2008-10-13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a much better version of a previous patch to make the parser tables constant. * Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck2008-02-15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry,vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. * vfs: Add 64 bit i_version supportJean Noel Cordenner2008-01-28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The i_version field of the inode is changed to be a 64-bit counter that is set on every inode creation and that is incremented every time the inode data is modified (similarly to the "ctime" time-stamp). The aim is to fulfill a NFSv4 requirement for rfc3530. This first part concerns the vfs, it converts the 32-bit i_version in the generic inode to a 64-bit, a flag is added in the super block in order to check if the feature is enabled and the i_version is incremented in the vfs. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make request_key() and co fundamentally asynchronous to make it easier for NFS to make use of them. There are now accessor functions that do asynchronous constructions, a wait function to wait for construction to complete, and a completion function for the key type to indicate completion of construction. Note that the construction queue is now gone. Instead, keys under construction are linked in to the appropriate keyring in advance, and that anyone encountering one must wait for it to be complete before they can use it. This is done automatically for userspace. The following auxiliary changes are also made: (1) Key type implementation stuff is split from linux/key.h into linux/key-type.h. (2) AF_RXRPC provides a way to allocate null rxrpc-type keys so that AFS does not need to call key_instantiate_and_link() directly. (3) Adjust the debugging macros so that they're -Wformat checked even if they are disabled, and make it so they can be enabled simply by defining __KDEBUG to be consistent with other code of mine. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * AFS: fix file lockingDavid Howells2007-07-31
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fix file locking for AFS: (*) Start the lock manager thread under a mutex to avoid a race. (*) Made the locking non-fair: New readlocks will jump pending writelocks if there's a readlock currently granted on a file. This makes the behaviour similar to Linux's VFS locking. * AFS: Use patched rxrpc_kernel_send_data() correctlyDavid Howells2007-07-20
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Fix afs_send_simple_reply() to accept a greater-than-zero return value from rxrpc_kernel_send_data() as being a successful return rather than thinking it an error and aborting the call. rxrpc_kernel_send_data() previously returned zero incorrectly when it worked successfully, but has been patched to return the number of bytes it transmitted. * mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().Paul Mundt2007-07-19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's c59def9f222d44bb7e2f0a559f2906191a0862d7 change. They've been BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them either. This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create() completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves, or the documentation references).
