The decision is taken on gadget driver side using the configuration chosen by the host and its bMaxPower field. Some systems can use the host's VBUS supply to augment or recharge a battery. (There's also a default of 100 mA for unconfigured devices, or 8 mA if they're OTG devices.) As it turned out, printers exist (e.g. Canon BJC-3000) that need prodding this way or else they stop. This patch restores the old behaviour. If you want to save battery, don't leave jobs in the print queue. I tested this on my printers by printing and examining usbmon traces to make sure status is being requested and printers continue to print. Tuomas Jäntti verified the fix on BJC-3000. But tape drives need a higher limit, since tapes can and do have very large block sizes. Without the ability to transfer an entire large block in a single command, such tapes can't be used. This fixes Bugzilla #12207. The issue is with hardware which needs help conforming to part of the USB 2.0 spec (section 8.5.3.2); some can automagically send a ZLP in response to an unexpected IN, but not all chips will do that. We don't need to check the packet length ourselves the way earlier code did, since the UDC must already check it. But we do need to tell the UDC when it must force a short packet termination of the data stage. (Based on a patch from Aric D. In at least one device (a Saitek Cyborg Gold 3D joystick), attempts to read the Configuration string cause the device to stop responding to Control requests. This patch (as1226) adds a quirks flag, telling the kernel not to read a device's Configuration or Interface strings, together with a new quirk for the offending joystick. Certain architectures (powerpc, in this case) may generate unexpected relocation formats in response to this, preventing modules from loading. (This was reported against Fedora, which appears to be the only distro doing any building against gcc-4.4 at present: RH bz#486545.) Also, since we fully construct phy_bus_id in the _probe() routine, we no longer need ->phy_address and ->mdio_bus fields in ucc_geth_info structure. I wish the patch would be a bit shorter, but it seems like the only way to fix the issue in a sane way. Luckily, the patch has been tested with real PHYs and fixed-link, so no further regressions expected. It calls request_irq() without setting IRQF_DISABLED ... which is correct for handlers that support IRQ sharing, since that behavior is not guaranteed for shared IRQs. However, its IRQ handler then wrongly assumes that IRQs are blocked. So the fix just uses the right spinlock primitives in the IRQ handler. NOTE: this is a classic example of the type of bug which lockdep currently masks by forcibly setting IRQF_DISABLED on IRQ handlers that did not request that flag. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | smsc911x_phy_adjust_link is called periodically by the phy layer (as it's run in polling mode), and it only updates the hardware when it sees a change in duplex or carrier. This patch clears the last known values every time the interface is brought up, instead of only when the module is loaded. Without this patch the adjust_link function never updates the hardware after an ifconfig down; ifconfig up. On a full duplex link this causes the tx error counter to increment, even though packets are correctly transmitted, as the default MAC_CR register setting is for half duplex. The tx errors are "no carrier" errors, which should be ignored in full-duplex mode. When MAC_CR is set to "full duplex" mode they are correctly ignored by the hardware. Note that even with this patch the tx error counter can increment if packets are transmitted between "ifconfig up" and the first phy poll interval. An improved solution would use the phy interrupt with phylib, but I haven't managed to make this work 100% robustly yet.
