From 09121255c784fd36ad6237a4e239c634b0209de0 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Peter Zijlstra Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2018 14:13:13 +0200 Subject: perf/UAPI: Clearly mark __PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN_EARLY as internal use Vince noted that commit: 6cbc304f2f36 ("perf/x86/intel: Fix unwind errors from PEBS entries (mk-II)") 'leaked' __PERF_SAMPLE_CALLCHAIN_EARLY into the UAPI namespace. And while sys_perf_event_open() will error out if you try to use it, it is exposed. Clearly mark it for internal use only to avoid any confusion. Disabling access to reads of this MSR gives userspace the control to "expose" this platform-dependent information to guests in a clear way. As it exists today, guests that read this MSR would get unpopulated information if userspace hadn't already set it (and prior to this patch series, only the CPUID faulting information could have been populated). This existing interface could be confusing if guests don't handle the potential for incorrect/incomplete information gracefully (e.g. zero reported for base frequency).
